“Virtual World of Technical Education” Held up as a Praiseworthy Project

The “Virtual World of Technical Education” Project carried out by TürkTraktör, the first manufacturer of the Turkish automotive industry and the leader in agricultural mechanization, was reviewed in the September issue of Springer magazine, one of the most prestigious academic publishers in the world. The article about the project states that virtual reality training has an 81% positive effect on learning, reduces human errors by 89%, and increases assembly skills by 28%.

The project, started as an experimental study in 2016 with the participation of 112 TürkTraktör operators to examine the effect of virtual reality on learning, was accepted by the EU Commission in 2017 with the contribution of Hacettepe University and Pamukkale University. The project, which expanded to include hearing-impaired employees in 2018, has achieved recognition by various institutions, primarily the European Commission Best EU Project Practice, the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey - Turkey Accessibility Award and MESS Stars of Occupational Safety - OHS Special Award.

The project first started to be implemented at the Virtual Reality Training Laboratories established in the Ankara and Sakarya Factories, especially in the operations of the Gearbox Assembly department, and then expanded to cover methodical trainings such as Lean Production, OHS, Environment, Energy, etc. as well as basic operator trainings for departments such as Logistics, Machining, etc.

After the completion of the trainings, the number of operator-related errors in the relevant operations was tracked for six months. As a result of the follow-up, an 89% decrease was observed in the number of operator-related errors in units receiving virtual reality training. Attracting attention thanks to its positive contribution to the production process, the project’s achievements were recognized by various awards.

In addition to the awards, the “Virtual World of Technical Education” project was published in scientific articles, shining out as an important contribution to the academic world. The project, published in the proceedings of the “II. International Conference on Distance Learning and Innovative Educational Technologies (DILET 2018)” organized by Başkent University, was also published in the SCI-indexed science and engineering journal of Springer, one of the most prestigious publishing companies in the academic community.
